Showers and Upside Down Baby Bav
This past weekend, Baby Bav got to spend some time outside (a rarity these days given the crazy weather we've been having - temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s with humidex in the mid-to-high 40s - eek!) as we had two baby showers to attend! On Saturday, our friends Doug & Anna (Emily's mom and dad) threw a shower for us, and then on Sunday, my good friends Steph & Sara threw us another shower. It was so nice to spend time with friends and family and sit around chatting and eating very yummy food! Thanks to everyone for their generosity and best wishes, and a special Thanks to Doug, Anna, Steph & Sara for putting together the wonderful showers! Marvin, Baby Bav and I are truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family!
This morning, Marvin and I went for our 37-week check up. I've gained 2 or 3 pounds (depending on when you looked at the scale) since my last visit just over a week ago (which I'm attributing to all of the yummy shower food I ate over the weekend...), my blood pressure was normal at 120/68 and Baby Bav's heart rate was somewhere in the 150 to 160 range (the doctor's heart rate thingy (and yes, that is the technical term for it...) doesn't have a reader that works, so she had to guess at the rate). The doctor then started to feel around for Baby Bav's position, which distracted me, so I forgot to find out what the belly measurement was.
After some poking and proding (and a double check), the doctor has confirmed that Baby Bav is still upside down (meaning the head is down) and hasn't flipped back after the ECV last Friday. This is good news as it means that if all stays normal then we have been able to successfully avoid having a c-section. Again, good news seeing as I was a bit unsure about what I thought about being cut open (sure you get a baby with a cute round head, you know exactly when you're going to have the baby, and you don't have to worry about all the "unpleasantness" of a "normal" delivery, but it's still surgery). Now I just have to start mentally preparing myself that I can go into labour at any time now, to remember to breathe the way we learned in class, to hope the water doesn't break in some very public place, and to not freak out and yell obscenities to Marvin during the whole process (I've heard that some labouring women aren't always the nicest people to be around, especially when you're the father that had a helping hand in getting the woman into her "predicament"). :)
So for now, I'm still at work (although I have already transitioned all of my stuff to my replacement, so there's really not a lot to do these days - yippee!). I'm planning to work right up until August 11th (so a week this Friday), which would bring me to a week before Baby Bav's due date. I thought about taking more time off, but I think I'd drive myself crazy with just sitting around the house watching the belly waiting for something to happen. We'll see... maybe things will happen sooner rather than later, although rumour has it that first babies are usually late. Stay tuned!
